Just can't get enough

Punky and I got to tour one of the new condos downtown. These condos have a spectacular view of the harbor and nice amenities, but they are small! Punky and I would be tripping over each other. We have separate living rooms on different floors of our house and it is what makes our marriage work. If we had separate bathrooms, life would be perfect.

We were with a group of young professionals, people who read motivational books and talk about fancy cars. People who like interesting, over-priced real estate. I got into a debate with two over image. They were suggesting that you must look successful in order to become successful, especially with the car you drive. And you can't say or do anything really cruel because it will hurt your image.

I tried to argue that I would rather drive a modest car and give to charity and I would refrain from being really cruel because I'm a decent human. (I am mildly cruel cuz I have a big mouth and enjoy irony).

Is the vanity of success ever going to not bother me?

2 bathrooms are good.
And moving towards integrity of action is not bad either.

You can be successful without being pretentious! I think their definition of successful is way off base.

Many years ago a friend's dad walked into the Chevy dealership wearing his farmer clothing. They didn't give him the time of day and lost a CASH sale of a brand new Chevy! He wnt elswhere.

This same friend and I went shopping to replace her fur coat which was wearing out. We weren't exactly dressed to the nines. It was January and cold. She found a very lovely new coat which cost about $3000 (extremely glamourous Glama mink) The saleswoman looked at her in a superior manner and asked her how she planned to pay for it. My friend said, "Do you give a discount for cash?" You should have seen the look on the woman's face! Then she said, "I will have to ask my husband --the owner-- about that." They said they would give the discount and when we went back with friend's hubby to pick it up he talked them into a hat to match!

These folks also are very generous about helping people who have needs. They are generous with both time and assets. They don't buy new cars! And they live in the same house that they built over 40 years ago. They have updated their kitchen and main bathroom.

Wondering what age these people were...Are those that you talked with from the generation coming up after us baby boomers or the younger baby boomers? I worry about the younger generation focusing too much on material things... ??

Can anyone worry more about material things than the baby boomers did?

As the first wave of boomers, we should not be talking about the younger generation's materialistic nature; we are largely responsible for that. I personally find the 20 and 30 somethings are very socially responsible and could put the rest of us to shame.
